Some varieties, like Haralson and State Fair, just to name a couple, set apples very heavy when the weather cooperates. If you look at the picture above, it shows a Haralson and how the fruit set this year. Most all of my Haralsons set heavy this spring, so that should translate to a good crop this fall. The June drop is coming up and thats when the tree thins itself naturally. So with that in mind, it should still be a good crop for alot of the orchard. Stay tuned.........
Now that June has arrived, its time to see if the trees are setting fruit. I can tell you that both the Zestar and Snow Sweet will not have much this year. The temp dropped to 28 degrees when the orchard was blooming and those 2 varieties did not take that well. Luckily, there are others to take the place of those 2. The remainder of the orchard looks good at this point. Just remember, its along way from bloom to fruit and anything can happen. Over the years, I've learned not to get to upset when the weather takes a turn for the worse. But its hard and this spring was a real test for my patience. An early spring is not what they need.
